Otx2ホメオ蛋白質は介在細胞の機能を成熟させる役割を持ち, 視覚野の臨界期を促す. すなわち, 経験を積みOtx2ホメオ蛋白質が大脳に移動して初めて, 大脳は正常に臨界期を迎え発達すると言える. さらに, Otx2ホメオ蛋白質を外部から操作することにより, 臨界期を人為的に制御することに成功した.
