Negative charge on erythrocyte was measured in children and adolescence with diabetes mellitus by alcian blue binding technique. The charge was significantly less in children and adolescence with diabetes than in control children. The reduced charge did not show any significant correlation with glycated hemoglobin, glycated albumin., serum sialic acid level, urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) excretion and urinary protein excretion, but it showed significant correlation with blood glucose concentration Correlation coefficient was 0.674 (n=17, p<0.01). These findings suggest that blood glucose concentration deeply affects membrane negative charge on erythrocytes, but glycation of hemoglobin and albumin do not.
