The medical charts of the inpatients, seen during the 30-year period from 1959 through 1988, were collected and reviewed. The following results were obtained, 1) total number of the patients was 11,651, and 2,886 (24.6%) of them had various infectious diseases. 2) Rates of infectious diseases in the total number of the patients showed a tendency of decline: 32.9% for the 1959~1968 period, 25.5% for the 1969~1978, and 17.1% for the 1979~1988, respectively. 3) Acute poliomyelitis, tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis showed a prominent reduction in the incidence, probably due to the wide prevalence of immunization. 4) In contrast, the incidence of mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome increased, since the first description of the disease in 1967. 5) Bacillary dysentery decreased due to improved sanitation. 6) Staphylococcus aureus decreased, while Haemophilus parainfluenzae and H. influenzae increased as causative agents of bacterial pneumonia. 7) Pyothorax decreased. 8) Methicillin- and cephem-resistant S.aureus appeared and caused pyothorax and sepsis. 9) S.aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli decreased, and H. influenzae increased as causative agents of bacterial meningitis. 10) E. coli was a common cause of urinary tract infections, and in addition to E. coli, Klebsiella and Proteus also caused it in patients with urinary tract anomalies. 11) Hemolytic streptococcal infection decreased, resulting in the reduction of rheumatic fever and acute glomeruulonephritis.
