Cancer board
The cancer board conducts conferences where surgeons, physicians, medical oncologists, therapeutic and diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and paramedical staff, including nurses, pharmacists, and medical social workers, participate. The objective of the cancer board is to provide the best treatment options available including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and palliative care to each cancer patient. The importance of the cancer board has become more pronounced because multimodality therapy has been proven to be a better cancer treatment option. Moreover, the understanding of cancer cells has undergone a paradigm shift in recent times. An oncogenic driver mutation has been shown to induce sustained proliferative signaling in many solid human tumors and resulted in signal addiction of cancer cells. A tailor-made molecular targeted therapy based on the understanding of signal addiction has reported great success. It will be critical to understand comprehensive molecular mechanisms present in cancer cells to select the optimum treatment including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Therefore, medical oncologists will play a more important role in the cancer board in the future. It is vital that the members of the cancer board work as a team, based on the concept one for all, all for one.
