The purpose of this study is to analyze the history of “community cooperation” in art education at junior high schools through the scope of the Course of Studies, teaching guidelines issued by Ministry of Education after WWII. It is clearly shown that the cooperation between a school and other educational institutions in the local community, such as fine art museums, has been shifted from their separate involvement to more productive bilateral collaboration. They used to try to yield educational benefits separately from their own standpoints, but currently both work collaboratively by taking advantage of respective strengths more efficiently. This study has also found that it is required to build sustainable systems of collaboration between the schools and their communities for further cooperation.
