The aim of this paper is to identify trends in staff and educational development in the United Kingdom. Over the past thirty years, two aspects of higher education institutions have been developed; namely, “staff development” and “educational development”. The term” staff development” basically focuses on the improvement of the capabilities of staffs, and “educational development” refers to the improvement and innovation of educational processes. According to staff and educational developers, these two aspects are interrelated. This paper, however, describes them separately in order to provide a good practice for discussion of faculty development in Japan. Firstly, I explore how staff development arose in higher education and how educational developers were promoted to establish professional teaching. Secondly, I analyze how educational development has progressed from the individual level to the institutional level and network of subject disciplines. Nowadays, the role of leading educational developers involves promoting strategic institutional change. Finally, I conclude that both staff development and educational development provide systematic and scholarly support for developing and facilitating the full potential of teaching staff and learning communities in higher education to improve the quality of student learning.
