This study outlines the functions of converbs in Sakha and Tyvan. The usage of converbs in these two Turkic languages indicate three main functions: predicates of non-main clauses (i.e., clause-chaining), adverbial phrases (including postpositions), and the preceding element of complex predicates. Each converb form differs in function and productivity. All Sakha converbs have a clause-chaining function and some may take a person/number marking that is partially related to the switch-reference. The complementizer dien, which originated from the sequential converb form of the verb die 'to say', has acquired nominal features in the morphosyntactic ground. In Tyvan, the sequential converb almost exclusively serves as a predicate of non-main clauses, whereas the simultaneous and connective converbs are mostly used in complex predicates. The Tyvan connective converb no longer has a clause-chaining function; instead, it has developed into a part of evidential and perfective markers.
