This paper focused on the topical function of subject-omission and involved some questions to make it clear how the Japanese-Learner grasp the four patterns of topic-omission-sentence reported by Kuno (1978). As a result, it was found that the subject-omission could be admitted when the subject is also a “Repeated topic” or when it is coreferent with the subject of the preceding sentence. On the other hand, it is difficult to be admitted when it is a “new topic” or when it is different from the topic of the preceding sentence for the Japanese-Learner. There are four reasons for this result: (1) using of the conjunction or not, (2) recognition of the topic function, (3) confusion between topic and subject, (4) ignoring view constraints.
