Reform in didactics
The reform of foreign language teaching that started 4 years ago has concentrated mainly on the improvement of the institutional framework at Niigata University. One result was the reduction of classmembers down to half the number of the usual 80 members. Yet the expected heightning of the competence in learning did not occur. As a second step in the reform of teaching foreign language we now propose a double track organization: intensive courses (4 hours a week) and, for the students who still have to be motivated to learn a second foreign language, an introductory lecture on languages and cultures that are taught at Niigata University. It is selfevident, that this reform is only one part of the whole reform that simultaneosly has to revise the didactic of teaching language.
