We conducted bird surveys in Kisenjo, on a hilly region on Sado Island, Niigata, Japan, from April to June, 2015. We counted birds at four fixed-radius points, and recorded all bird species that occurred in this site. 30 species of birds were recorded, and the Brown-eared Bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) was the most abundant species. The most of the land in the vicinity of the study site is forested, with only few patches of small open spaces such as rice paddies and wetlands, as majority of cultivated lands have been deserted in past six decades. There are no residential areas, and some fallow lands have been restored as wetlands in the study site in recent years. This patch-matrix structure appeared to exclude some bird species from the site, like the Oriental Greenfinch (Chloris sinica) and Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) that are abundant on lowland edge habitats on Sado Island. The result of this study suggests that such habitat management could produce a unique bird community.
