Diatom analyses were conducted on 52 samples from 2 cores in the river mouth of Shinanogawa River in order to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental changes after 5,000 YBP. From 4,700 YBP to ca. 1,400 YBP, a coastal marine environment developed under the influence of fresh water. During this stage two periods of marine water expansion occurred, from 4,700 YBP to ca. 1,400 YBP and at ca. 1,400 YBP. After ca. 1,400 YBP, this coastal marine area was buried by fluvial sediments, some fresh water ponds were appeared along flood plains, but at ca. 350 YBP a water expansion occurred with the small influence of marine water. Two horizons of marine water expansion may be traced in inner area of the Echigo plain.
