The photo-electron transfer (PET) reaction catalyzed by triphenylpyrylium (TPP) salt was found to be an effective and safe method for the deprotection of thioacetals compared with the common method using heavy metal compounds. In this paper the above mentioned reaction was modified for the teaching material of undergraduate experiments without using expensive equipments. 2,2-Di-(p-methylphenyl)-1,3-dithiane was efficiently deprotected to afford the corresponding ketone using sunlight.
