Fifty-six forensic autopsies of newborn and still-born infants were performed during the past fourteen years (1977~1990) and corresponded to 7.1% of all forensic autopsies. They were divided into Group I to VII. Group I consist of 3 cases of consecutive infanticides, Group II 9 infanticide cases, Group III 5 reprieve cases, Group IV 2 non-indictment cases, Group V 15 cases with unsufficient evidence, Group VI 3 cases under tracing, Group VII 8 unsolved cases. 40 cases were found in the mother’s homes and 8 cases were precipitate labors, 47 cases were confirmed to be full-term deliveries. The proof of breathing was examined by hydrostatic lung test in 45 cases, 26 cases were positive completely and II cases positive partially, these 37 cases were concluded to be live-births. 8 cases were negative, but 4 cases concluded to be live-births because caput succedaneum or aspiration of faeces was found in each two of them. The histological development of lung was divided into eight phases (E, P, PC, C, CS, SA, S, A), according to Thurlbeck’s classification 〔Embryonic (E), Pseudoglandular (P), Canalicular (C), Saccular (S) and Alveolar (A) phase〕. The Lung of almost cases was immature. 115 pathological autopsy cases of newborn and still-born infants were histologically analyzed. Localized expansion of lung was found in 73 live-born infants and 2 still-born anencephalies, but not found in 12 live-born infants. The histological development of lung was examined. 6 cases were in phase P, 6 in PC, 62 in C, 18 in CS, 19 in S, 3 in SA and 1 in A. 9 cases in phase P or PC were still-born infants, 3 cases in phase PC were live-born infants. A shortage of pulmonary surfactant and an immaturity of lung was revealed even in phase C. It may be difficult for 72 newborns in phase P~C to survive.
