Awano Ryutaro was an active teacher in the Taisho-Showa period. He guided the elementary school pupils in writing children's songs called 'doyo'. But on how to guide them, he was opposed to other teachers. It seemed that there was a difference in defining the concept of 'children' at the root. In this essay, I took extracts from "A Practical Study - The Children Songs and Elementary School Education (Jissai Kenkyuu - Jido to Doyo no Kyouiku)", and examined the content that includes the words, and provided the meaning of 'children (jido)' expressed by Awano. The idea that adults and children are different and children are not incomplete adult, but are complete and have original characteristics, came into existence in the modern West. In Japan, the concept was introduced during the Meiji period and was generalized during Taisho period. Particularly the authors of children's literature regarded children as sacred. The teachers who were opposed to Awano guided based on only the concept. But Awano was based on not only the concept but also the thinking that the children have to be leaded by adults to be the complete adult and have to be good man. It was the Awano's feature that he had both element.
