This research examined the effect of pitch variation, in 30-Hertz intervals, on the interpretation of one sarcastic utterance. Praat software was used to manipulate the pitch of one sarcastic utterance and ten versions of the same sarcastic utterance, each with a different pitch, were created via iMovie software. Then, research subjects were asked to assess the sarcasm viewed in each of the ten separate versions. The results of this research found that some research subjects assessed sarcasm based more on suprasegmental signals while others assessed sarcasm based more on kinesthetic signals. Furthermore, this research found that among research subjects who assessed sarcasm based on suprasegmental signals, an increase in pitch gradually attenuates, but does not eliminate, the saliency of sarcasm.
