The aim this study is to shed light on Kanbara Ariake's so far less known poem Tama-no-hi-no-shoku, one of the eight poems collectively called Hyou-no-chi put at the beginning of Ariake-shu. The study shows this poem borrows images from the Bible and that it has a self-referential characteristic. By paying attention to these two points, the author concludes, Ariake's view of sex can be more clearly understood.
