The aim of this study is to shed light on Kanbara Ariake's ballads. The study shows that his most famous ballad Ningyo-no-umi is composed of Masame (The Visible) and Maboroshi (The Invisible). Two constituene elements create the world in which the body is in complete oness with the spirit. The study concludes that Ariake's state of mind described in his ballads is not so different from the one in his sonnets.
